E’ famoso in tutta Italia come il Fiume Sacro alla Patria, scorre completamente in Veneto nascendo sul Monte Peralba, a Sappada, da una sorgente a 2037m s.l.m. Inizialmente e’ solo un piccolo torrente che ben presto grazie ai numerosi affluenti acquisisce una notevole portata. Sfocia nell’alto Adriatico tra Jesolo ed Eraclea, anche se il suo corso fu deviato dai veneziani per salvarne la laguna, e’ la Piave.

La Piave e’ un fiume carico di storia e significato per la popolazione italiana, nel 1917 infatti fu la linea strategica, dopo la battaglia di Caporetto, per la difesa dalle truppe austro-ungariche e tedesche. I nemici non riuscirono mai a stabilirsi a lungo sulla sponda destra e con la battaglia del Solstizio le truppe italiane vinsero il nemico, cosicche’ il 4 novembre 1918 a Vittorio Veneto si firmo’ l’Armistizio.

La Grande Guerra in queste zone si rivive nei ricordi di chi li ha potuti sentir raccontare dai nonni o dai genitori, dai nomi dei paesi lungo le sponde della Piave, dai monumenti commemorativi ed uno tra tutti e’ l’“Isola dei Morti” in localita’ Moriago della Battaglia, ai piedi del Montello. Il nome fu dato in memoria dei soldati che nell’ottobre 1918 sfondarono le linee austriache, purtroppo pero’ nonostante la vittoria, molte furono le vite sacrificate, quelle dei ragazzi del ’99 ed in loro onore si rinomino’ l’Isola Verde, in Isola dei Morti. Ora qui troviamo un parco con aree di sosta e picnic, percorsi informativi sui fatti bellici di cui la zona e’ stata teatro.

Adiacente al letto del fiume potrete visitare il fenomeno delle “Fontane Bianche”, di cui ve ne ho gia’ parlato. In qua e in la’ sorgono delle spiagge attrezzate o semplici luoghi in cui poter organizzare grigliate con amici e prendere il sole in estate. Particolarmente belle sono le passeggiate lungo le sue grave, con il ricordo di chi li’ ha sacrificato la propria giovane vita per la Patria.

It is famous throughout Italy as the Sacred River of the Homeland, it flows completely in Veneto born on Monte Peralba, in Sappada, from a spring at 2037m above sea level. At the beginning it is only a small stream that soon thanks to the many tributaries gains a considerable scale. It reaches the northern Adriatic sea between Jesolo and Eraclea, though its course was diverted by the Venetians to save the lagoon, it is the river Piave.

The Piave is a river full with history and significance for the Italian population, since in 1917 it was the strategic line, after the Battle of Caporetto, for the defense to the Austro-Hungarian and German armies. The enemies have never managed to establish for long on the right bank and on the Battle of the Solstizio the Italian troops overcame the enemy, so that on 4th November 1918 in Vittorio Veneto was signed the Armistice.

In this area the Great War – WWI  keep on living in the memories of those who were told about it by their grandparents or parents, in the names of the towns along its banks, in the memorials and one of those is the “Isola dei Morti” – Isle of the Dead – in Moriago dell Battaglia at the foot of the Montello hill. The name was given in memory of the soldiers who broke down in October 1918 the Austrian lines, but despite the victory, there were many losses among the ’99 guys and in their honor the “Isola Verde” – Green Island – was renamed “Isle of the Dead.” Now there’s a park with picnic and rest areas as well as information about the World War I.

Next to the bed of the river you can visit the phenomenon of “Fontane Bianche”, which I’ve already told you about. There are several beaches along the river Piave or just places where you can organize barbecues with friends and sunbathing in summer time. Particularly beautiful are the walks along its banks, reminding the guys who sacrificed their young life for our homeland.
